Unexpected and happy news! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child!
The news broke this morning when photographers arrived for Kate's engagement with Family Action and were told it had been cancelled out of the blue. As with her previous pregnancies, the Duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum and will no longer carry out today's engagement at the Hornsey Road Children's Centre today. I imagine tomorrow's embargoed event is off the cards too. Kate is being cared for at Kensington Palace. Rebecca English reports Kate is less than twelve weeks pregnant, once again the announcement had to be made earlier than planned because of the cancelled engagement. It is thought the royal baby will arrive in April/May.
A statement from Kensington Palace read "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child. The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news".
Prince Harry is in Manchester today to visit organisations and projects which are working to support sections of the city's community. He has described the news as "fantastic, brilliant, very, very happy for them". When asked how Kate is, he replied, "I haven't seen her for a while, but I think she's OK".

Rumours of a third baby have been circulating since Princess Charlotte was born. Some commentators predicted at least one more baby was likely, whilst others thought with the move to London and increased roles, the couple wouldn't have more children. Tellingly, Kensington Palace only noted William would be taking on a full-time schedule of duties, they never specified exactly how Kate's role would change. I suspect this is because the couple were very much hoping to add to their family this year. During the Poland tour in July, Kate was given a present for newborns. She laughed, turned to William and said "We will just have to have more babies".
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is very acute morning sickness, which may require supplementary hydration, medication and nutrients. Pregnancy Sickness Support writes: 'Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum are particularly isolating conditions and women are very often left feeling misunderstood and alone for months on end when housebound'. When Kate was in the early stages of her first pregnancy, the morning sickness was so severe she was hospitalised at King Edward VII hospital.
When Kate's second pregnancy was announced (The Royal Record notes almost exactly three years ago, 8 September 2014) Kate was treated at home at Kensington Palace by the surgeon gynaecologist to the Queen Alan Farthing. Dr. Farthing assisted Marcus Setchell when Kate was expecting George. We didn't see Kate publicly until the 21 October, when she joined William to welcome President Tony Tan Keng Yam of Singapore and his wife Mary Chee Bee Kiang at the start of a four-day state visit to Britain.

The baby will be a Prince or Princess, as The Queen ensured all William's children would become HRHs with fitting titles. The Prince or Princess will be fifth in line to the throne. I imagine the Duchess is once again being treated by Dr. Farthing at KP. Carole Middleton spent the day with Kate. There are photos of her leaving KP available on the Mail Online.

Of course, we saw Kate last Wednesday with William and Harry at The White Garden, dedicated to the late, Diana, Princess of Wales. The Duchess selected the flowing Prada poppy print dress for the occasion.
Before that, we saw a glimpse of Kate arrive at Crathie Kirk on Sunday, 20 August, during a week long stay in Balmoral with the royal family. There was a report from Woman's Day claiming Kate had been hospitalised the previous week at King Edward VII hospital in Marylebone. The report claimed she was released the following day. It was never confirmed, nor picked up by reputable media outlets. I asked a reliable royal reporter who thought it was "rubbish". Given the announcement today, I thought it worth mentioning.
